We all love animals. We keep them as pets and we eat them. We love them on 364 days of the year (my friends would say: elke dag is dierendag). But on 4 October we think about the results of other human behaviour: animal shelters, mutants (scientific experiments) and extinction because of excessive hunting and gathering. This awareness day (WAD - World Day of the Animal) is ironic in that we pause to reflect on the "animal" in ourselves.

An animal more important than a human orbitted the earth before us. It was a dog, her name was Laika.

I picture a Day of the Triffids sequel book called Day of the Calupusses in which a scary, mobile, viral and all-consuming fictional animal species arrives from a planet far, far away and tickles us in the place that keeps us awake.
